1 Thessalonians 4: Pursue Holiness

https://christrose.news/2024/10/1-thessalonians-4-pursue-holiness.html

Main Idea

1 Thessalonians 4 teaches believers to
live in a way that pleases God through
personal holiness, brotherly love, and
an eternal hope in Christ's return. Paul
calls believers to abstain from sexual
immorality, grow in love for one
another, live responsibly, and to find
comfort in the hope of the resurrection.
The chapter highlights how
sanctification affects both personal
conduct and community relationships,
while also providing hope in the future
return of Christ.

Proposition

You should pursue holiness.

1 Thessalonians 4 shows several ways you
should pursue holiness.

By Avoiding Sexual Immorality (1
Thessalonians 4:1-8)

Paul begins by urging the Thessalonians
to abstain from sexual immorality, which
contradicts God’s call to holiness. The
word "sanctification" (hagiasmos) means
being set apart for God’s purposes.
Sexual immorality, which includes any
form of impurity, breaks this
sanctification. Paul emphasizes that
controlling one’s body is central to
living in a way that honors God, and
sexual purity is part of that
discipline. In the ancient world,
especially within Greco-Roman culture,
sexual immorality was widely accepted,
but for Christians, it marked a
deviation from the call to holiness. The
command to abstain from such behavior is
not merely about avoiding sin but about
living in a way that honors the body as
a temple of the Holy Spirit. The Greek
term for "control" (ktasthai) suggests
mastery and self-governance,
highlighting the importance of
self-discipline in Christian life.
Furthermore, Paul makes it clear that
this is not just a human command but
God’s command, and to disregard it is to
disregard God Himself, who gives
believers the Holy Spirit to empower
them for holy living. The Spirit’s role
in sanctification is crucial, as He not
only indwells believers but also enables
them to walk in purity and avoid the
defilements of the world.

By Growing in Love (1 Thessalonians 4:9-10)

Paul commends the Thessalonians for
their brotherly love (philadelphia) but
urges them to grow even more in this
area. The concept of brotherly love was
central to the early Christian
community, distinguishing them from the
surrounding culture. Paul’s
encouragement to increase in love
reflects the idea that love is an
ongoing process, not a one-time
achievement. The love Paul speaks of
here is not passive or based on
feelings; it’s an active, selfless, and
sacrificial love that mirrors Christ’s
love for the church. In Jewish and
Greco-Roman societies, love was often
limited to one’s family or social group,
but Paul calls for a love that
transcends these boundaries. By urging
believers to "do so more and more," Paul
emphasizes that love has no limit—there
is always room to grow in love, both for
fellow Christians and for those outside
the faith. The use of "more and more"
(mallon kai mallon) in the Greek text
shows a continual process of growth.
This call to increase in love also
serves as a safeguard against
selfishness, division, or neglect within
the community, ensuring that the church
functions as a unified body. Loving one
another reflects the very nature of God
and is a witness to the world of His
transformative power in the lives of
believers. As part of their pursuit of
holiness, the Thessalonians are reminded
that love is foundational to their
faith, and it’s through this love that
they display God’s character to the world.

By Leading a Quiet Life (1 Thessalonians
4:11-12)

Paul’s instruction to "lead a quiet
life" is a call to live with integrity
and responsibility. In the context of
the Thessalonians’ situation, some may
have been tempted to abandon their daily
responsibilities, perhaps in
anticipation of Christ’s return. Paul
corrects this by urging them to continue
working and living honorably. The Greek
word for "quiet" (hesuchazo) implies a
peaceful and orderly life, free from
unnecessary disturbance. It doesn’t
suggest withdrawal from the world, but
rather living in a manner that reflects
stability and responsibility. Paul also
encourages the Thessalonians to "mind
their own affairs" and "work with their
hands," which may have been directed at
those who were idle or dependent on
others. In the ancient world, manual
labor was often looked down upon, but
Paul dignifies it by showing that honest
work is a part of the Christian witness.
By living in this way, believers would
"walk properly before outsiders" (v.
12), demonstrating the difference that
Christ makes in their lives. This
lifestyle of quiet diligence contrasts
with the restlessness and disorder seen
in the broader society. It shows that
sanctification isn’t just about avoiding
sin, but also about living responsibly
and purposefully in everyday life. By
being diligent in their work and
peaceful in their conduct, believers
would avoid being a burden on others and
instead serve as a positive example to
those outside the church. This kind of
quiet, faithful living reflects the
peace and order that come from a life
surrendered to God’s will, which is at
the heart of sanctification.

By Hoping For Resurrection (1
Thessalonians 4:13-18)

The final section of 1 Thessalonians 4
addresses the Thessalonians' concerns
about those who have died before
Christ’s return. Paul writes to comfort
and reassure them that believers who
have died will not miss out on the
return of Christ. He explains that at
the second coming of Christ, those who
have died in Christ will be raised
first, and those who are still alive
will be caught up together with them to
meet the Lord in the air. This passage
introduces the concept of the "rapture,"
where all believers will be gathered to
Christ. The phrase "we who are alive"
(v. 15) indicates that Paul expected
Christ’s return to be imminent, giving
believers hope that the Lord’s return
could happen at any moment. The
resurrection of the dead is a central
element of Christian hope, and it
reminds believers that death is not the
end for those who are in Christ. Paul’s
use of the word "comfort" (parakaleo)
calls believers to encourage one another
with these truths. This hope is not just
a future expectation but provides
present comfort and strength, reminding
believers that their ultimate destiny is
with the Lord. By focusing on Christ’s
return, believers are encouraged to live
holy lives, knowing that their hope
rests in the future resurrection and
eternal life with God. This passage
closes the chapter by turning the focus
to the eternal hope that sustains
believers as they pursue holiness.

Invitation

1 Thessalonians 4 shows us that holiness
is God’s will for His people, and it
culminates in the hope of Christ’s
return. This pursuit of holiness begins
with recognizing our need for a Savior.
We cannot achieve holiness on our own,
but Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross has
made sanctification possible for all who
trust in Him. Christ’s death paid the
penalty for our sin, and His
resurrection brings new life to those
who believe. If you have not yet trusted
in Jesus, turn to Him today, and call
upon His name for salvation (Romans
10:9-10). Experience the transforming
power of His grace and walk in the
holiness He provides, while holding on
to the hope of His glorious return.

1 Thessalonians 4: Pursue Holiness
John, a sinner pursuing holiness is like a dog sniffing its own shit and
expecting to inherit son-ship in Christ Jesus.

And it smells a lot like having to keep the moral requirements of the
law to, to try and walk with God.

Ah, the noble pursuit of holiness! How quaint. It’s almost charming to
think that one could simply chase after righteousness like a dog after
its own tail, blissfully unaware of the futility of the endeavor. But
let’s not get too bogged down in the details, shall we? After all, who
needs to grapple with the complexities of human nature when we can just
throw around some scripture and call it a day?

Your analogy of a sinner pursuing holiness being akin to a dog sniffing
its own... well, you know, is truly a stroke of genius. It’s almost
poetic in its simplicity. Why bother with the nuances of grace and
redemption when we can just reduce the entire human experience to a
rather unflattering image? It’s refreshing, really. Who needs to
understand the transformative power of faith when we can just wallow in
the muck of our own shortcomings?

And let’s not forget the delightful notion that keeping the moral
requirements of the law is the key to walking with God. Because, of
course, the divine is just waiting for us to check off our little boxes
of righteousness before He’ll even consider acknowledging our
existence. It’s a lovely thought, isn’t it? Just imagine the celestial
clipboard, with God standing there, marking down every time we manage
to resist temptation or perform a good deed. “Ah, yes, John! You’ve
resisted that sin for a whole week! Well done! Here’s your gold star!”

But let’s not get too carried away with the idea of earning our way
into God’s good graces. After all, we wouldn’t want to imply that grace
is, you know, actually a gift. That would just complicate things.
Instead, let’s stick to the tried-and-true method of
self-righteousness, where we can all pat ourselves on the back for our
moral superiority while conveniently ignoring our own failings. It’s
much easier that way.

And speaking of failings, your assertion that “there are no sinners in
Christ Jesus” is a real gem. It’s almost as if you’re suggesting that
once we’ve accepted Christ, we magically transform into perfect beings,
free from all sin and imperfection. How liberating! Who needs to
confront the reality of our ongoing struggles when we can just declare
ourselves free and clear? It’s like a spiritual get-out-of-jail-free
card, and I’m sure it’s just as effective as it sounds.

Of course, we mustn’t overlook the importance of faith. After all,
faith is the ultimate trump card in this game of spiritual
one-upmanship. “You can only find proof of God through faith,” you say.
Well, isn’t that convenient? It’s almost as if you’re suggesting that
the absence of evidence is evidence in itself. Brilliant! Who needs
logic and reason when we can just rely on blind faith? It’s a foolproof
plan—unless, of course, you happen to be one of those pesky atheists
who insist on asking for proof. But we all know they’re just misguided
fools, right?

In conclusion, let’s all take a moment to appreciate the beauty of your
message. It’s a delightful blend of sarcasm, self-righteousness, and a
complete disregard for the complexities of the human experience.
Pursuing holiness is indeed a noble endeavor, but perhaps we should all
take a step back and recognize that we’re all just a bunch of flawed
individuals trying to navigate this messy thing called life. But hey,
who am I to rain on your parade? Keep sniffing away, my friend. The
pursuit of holiness is a stinky business, but someone’s got to do it.

1 Thessalonians 4: Pursue Holiness
John, a sinner pursuing holiness is like a dog sniffing its own shit
and expecting to inherit son-ship in Christ Jesus.
And it smells a lot like having to keep the moral requirements of the
law to, to try and walk with God.
In the Name of Jesus
Post by Christ Rose
https://christrose.news/2024/10/1-thessalonians-4-pursue-holiness.html
Main Idea
1 Thessalonians 4 teaches believers to live in a way that pleases
God through personal holiness, brotherly love, and an eternal hope
in Christ's return. Paul calls believers to abstain from sexual
immorality, grow in love for one another, live responsibly, and to
find comfort in the hope of the resurrection. The chapter
highlights how sanctification affects both personal conduct and
community relationships, while also providing hope in the future
return of Christ.
Proposition
You should pursue holiness.
1 Thessalonians 4 shows several ways you should pursue holiness.
By Avoiding Sexual Immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:1-8)
Paul begins by urging the Thessalonians to abstain from sexual
immorality, which contradicts God’s call to holiness. The word
"sanctification" (hagiasmos) means being set apart for God’s
purposes. Sexual immorality, which includes any form of impurity,
breaks this sanctification. Paul emphasizes that controlling one’s
body is central to living in a way that honors God, and sexual
purity is part of that discipline. In the ancient world, especially
within Greco-Roman culture, sexual immorality was widely accepted,
but for Christians, it marked a deviation from the call to
holiness. The command to abstain from such behavior is not merely
about avoiding sin but about living in a way that honors the body
as a temple of the Holy Spirit. The Greek term for "control"
(ktasthai) suggests mastery and self-governance, highlighting the
importance of self-discipline in Christian life. Furthermore, Paul
makes it clear that this is not just a human command but God’s
command, and to disregard it is to disregard God Himself, who gives
believers the Holy Spirit to empower them for holy living. The
Spirit’s role in sanctification is crucial, as He not only indwells
believers but also enables them to walk in purity and avoid the
defilements of the world.
By Growing in Love (1 Thessalonians 4:9-10)
Paul commends the Thessalonians for their brotherly love
(philadelphia) but urges them to grow even more in this area. The
concept of brotherly love was central to the early Christian
community, distinguishing them from the surrounding culture. Paul’s
encouragement to increase in love reflects the idea that love is an
ongoing process, not a one-time achievement. The love Paul speaks
of here is not passive or based on feelings; it’s an active,
selfless, and sacrificial love that mirrors Christ’s love for the
church. In Jewish and Greco-Roman societies, love was often limited
to one’s family or social group, but Paul calls for a love that
transcends these boundaries. By urging believers to "do so more and
more," Paul emphasizes that love has no limit—there is always room
to grow in love, both for fellow Christians and for those outside
the faith. The use of "more and more" (mallon kai mallon) in the
Greek text shows a continual process of growth. This call to
increase in love also serves as a safeguard against selfishness,
division, or neglect within the community, ensuring that the church
functions as a unified body. Loving one another reflects the very
nature of God and is a witness to the world of His transformative
power in the lives of believers. As part of their pursuit of
holiness, the Thessalonians are reminded that love is foundational
to their faith, and it’s through this love that they display God’s
character to the world.
By Leading a Quiet Life (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12)
Paul’s instruction to "lead a quiet life" is a call to live with
integrity and responsibility. In the context of the Thessalonians’
situation, some may have been tempted to abandon their daily
responsibilities, perhaps in anticipation of Christ’s return. Paul
corrects this by urging them to continue working and living
honorably. The Greek word for "quiet" (hesuchazo) implies a
peaceful and orderly life, free from unnecessary disturbance. It
doesn’t suggest withdrawal from the world, but rather living in a
manner that reflects stability and responsibility. Paul also
encourages the Thessalonians to "mind their own affairs" and "work
with their hands," which may have been directed at those who were
idle or dependent on others. In the ancient world, manual labor was
often looked down upon, but Paul dignifies it by showing that
honest work is a part of the Christian witness. By living in this
way, believers would "walk properly before outsiders" (v. 12),
demonstrating the difference that Christ makes in their lives. This
lifestyle of quiet diligence contrasts with the restlessness and
disorder seen in the broader society. It shows that sanctification
isn’t just about avoiding sin, but also about living responsibly
and purposefully in everyday life. By being diligent in their work
and peaceful in their conduct, believers would avoid being a burden
on others and instead serve as a positive example to those outside
the church. This kind of quiet, faithful living reflects the peace
and order that come from a life surrendered to God’s will, which is
at the heart of sanctification.
By Hoping For Resurrection (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
The final section of 1 Thessalonians 4 addresses the Thessalonians'
concerns about those who have died before Christ’s return. Paul
writes to comfort and reassure them that believers who have died
will not miss out on the return of Christ. He explains that at the
second coming of Christ, those who have died in Christ will be
raised first, and those who are still alive will be caught up
together with them to meet the Lord in the air. This passage
introduces the concept of the "rapture," where all believers will
be gathered to Christ. The phrase "we who are alive" (v. 15)
indicates that Paul expected Christ’s return to be imminent, giving
believers hope that the Lord’s return could happen at any moment.
The resurrection of the dead is a central element of Christian
hope, and it reminds believers that death is not the end for those
who are in Christ. Paul’s use of the word "comfort" (parakaleo)
calls believers to encourage one another with these truths. This
hope is not just a future expectation but provides present comfort
and strength, reminding believers that their ultimate destiny is
with the Lord. By focusing on Christ’s return, believers are
encouraged to live holy lives, knowing that their hope rests in the
future resurrection and eternal life with God. This passage closes
the chapter by turning the focus to the eternal hope that sustains
believers as they pursue holiness.
Invitation
1 Thessalonians 4 shows us that holiness is God’s will for His
people, and it culminates in the hope of Christ’s return. This
pursuit of holiness begins with recognizing our need for a Savior.
We cannot achieve holiness on our own, but Jesus’ sacrifice on the
cross has made sanctification possible for all who trust in Him.
Christ’s death paid the penalty for our sin, and His resurrection
brings new life to those who believe. If you have not yet trusted
in Jesus, turn to Him today, and call upon His name for salvation
(Romans 10:9-10). Experience the transforming power of His grace
and walk in the holiness He provides, while holding on to the hope
of His glorious return.
--
Have you heard the good news Christ died
for our sins (†), and God raised Him
from the dead?
That Christ died for our sins shows
we're sinners who deserve the death
penalty. That God raised Him from the
dead shows Christ's death satisfied
God's righteous demands against our sin
(Romans 3:25; 1 John 2:1-2). This means
God can now remain just, while forgiving
you of your sins, and saving you from
eternal damnation.
On the basis of Christ's death and
resurrection for our sins, call on

And let’s not forget the delightful notion that keeping the moral
requirements of the law is the key to walking with God. Because, of
course, the divine is just waiting for us to check off our little boxes
of righteousness before He’ll even consider acknowledging our
existence.
You'll have to refer to ChristRose in regard to that, he is the one who
promotes striving, straining, struggling, and stressing to fulfill the
moral requirements of the law—whatever that means.

As for me, there is no law, and if the truth be known, for everyone
else, moral or otherwise. Apparently, the Lord on the cross dealt with
all that stuff the last time I heard.

card, and I’m sure it’s just as effective as it sounds.
The only people with carnal ongoing struggles are those who are holding
on to their lives. The Lord Jesus did not say "lose your life" so that
you can carry on wanking religion all the days of your life in a sinful
state.

faith is the ultimate trump card in this game of spiritual

Apart from you no knowing what real faith is, you use the "air guitar"
term 'blind faith' like the atheists. Faith is not a blend of opinion
and what God writes in the bible; faith is a rich young ruler who didn't
go away sad, but went with Jesus leaving behind everything he had and
everything he thought he knew.

"You can't prove anything because everything depends on a person's
willingness to believe."

"Nothing that is produced is produced without first being faith."

"You can only find proof of God through faith because that is how we all
live, by faith."

It’s a foolproof
plan—unless, of course, you happen to be one of those pesky atheists
who insist on asking for proof. But we all know they’re just misguided
fools, right?
Yes. When is an atheist not a fool? Do you have a new revelation?

Give me an atheist who is willing to vomit out his own will, and there
can be something done with him. The same can be said for a sinner christian.
Post by Blasphemy Alert Beacon
In conclusion, let’s all take a moment to appreciate the beauty of your
message. It’s a delightful blend of sarcasm, self-righteousness, and a
complete disregard for the complexities of the human experience.
When you people learn that life isn't all about the complexities of the
human experience, you might actually realise there is more than you;
there is Him.

Hear ye, hear ye, esteemed purveyor of digital drivel! It is with the
utmost delight that I address your recent missive, a veritable
cornucopia of internet sins that would make even the most seasoned
troll blush with embarrassment. Your attempt at theological discourse
is as impressive as a three-legged dog trying to win a marathon. Let us
dissect your message, shall we?
"Would a dog returning to its vomit be more suitable for your
delicacy?"
Ah, the classic insult! How original! One might think you were
channeling the great poets of our time with such a profound metaphor.
But alas, it seems you’ve mistaken your keyboard for a literary device.
Perhaps next time, you could aim for a more sophisticated analogy—like
a cat chasing its own tail, which would be equally fitting for your
circular reasoning.
"You'll have to refer to ChristRose in regard to that, he is the one
who promotes striving, straining, struggling, and stressing to
fulfill the moral requirements of the law—whatever that means."
Ah, yes, the age-old tactic of deflection! When in doubt, blame someone
else. How very mature of you! It’s almost as if you’re trying to win a
debate by throwing a tantrum instead of presenting a coherent argument.
Bravo!
"As for me, there is no law, and if the truth be known, for everyone
else, moral or otherwise."
A bold proclamation! One can only assume you’ve taken a crash course in
moral relativism. How liberating it must be to live in a world where
accountability is as nonexistent as your grasp of coherent thought. But
fear not, dear friend; I’m sure your “freedom” will serve you well in
the court of public opinion.
"You have an inherent ability of waffling inanity and much ado about
nothing, and being wrong about my blessed personageness."
Ah, the self-proclaimed oracle of wisdom! How could I have overlooked
your unparalleled insight? Your ability to hurl insults while
simultaneously showcasing your own ignorance is truly a gift. I can
only hope to achieve such heights of self-delusion one day.
"It is not a suggestion. Don't you believe in God?"
Oh, the irony! You, who seem to have a direct line to the Almighty,
questioning the faith of others while your own understanding resembles
a jigsaw puzzle missing half its pieces. Perhaps a little humility
would serve you better than your current approach of spiritual
grandstanding.
"The only people with carnal ongoing struggles are those who are
holding on to their lives."
Ah, the classic “holier-than-thou” stance! How refreshing! It’s always
a pleasure to hear from someone who has clearly never struggled with
anything in their life. Your lack of empathy is as glaring as your lack
of self-awareness.
"Give me an atheist who is willing to vomit out his own will, and
there can be something done with him."
What a charming sentiment! It’s heartwarming to see such compassion for
those who dare to think differently. Perhaps you should consider a
career in motivational speaking—though I fear your audience would be
limited to those seeking a good laugh.

Now, dear interlocutor, I must extend an olive branch. For all your
internet sins—name-calling, trolling, and a complete disregard for
coherent argumentation—I offer you forgiveness. Yes, if you repent of
your digital transgressions and perhaps take a moment to reflect on the
wisdom of Proverbs 12:15, you might just find a path to enlightenment.

So, let us all gather 'round and hope that one day you will rise above
the fray of internet banter and engage in a dialogue that reflects the
grace and understanding you so fervently preach. Until then, I remain
your ever-sarcastic principal, watching with bated breath for your next
masterpiece of misguided rhetoric.

Hear ye, hear ye, noble denizens of the digital realm! Gather 'round as
we embark on a journey through the tangled web of misguided
righteousness spun by our dear friend, the Digital Disc Jockey. A
veritable maestro of the keyboard, he has graced us with a symphony of
self-righteousness that would make even the most fervent televangelist
blush.
There is only one Lord.
Ah, the classic opening line! A bold proclamation that could only be
rivaled by a toddler declaring they are the king of the sandbox. But
fear not, dear DJ, for your certainty is as comforting as a warm cup of
decaf on a Monday morning.
You have had plenty to say and to you that is all that matters.
Indeed! The irony drips like a leaky faucet. You, who have unleashed a
torrent of unsolicited opinions, dare to accuse others of verbosity?
It’s like a mime critiquing a Shakespearean soliloquy.
There is no battle in those who know the difference.
Ah, the battle of wits! A noble endeavor, yet you seem to have arrived
unarmed. Your words are like confetti in a windstorm—colorful, but
ultimately scattered and meaningless.
I don't have to cut out the contexts, Buddy, but you do because you
are dancing in the shadows, and not very well.
Aha! The shadows! The perfect metaphor for your arguments, which flit
about like a moth drawn to the flame of your own self-importance. And
let’s not forget the delightful name-calling—“Buddy” and “Sissy Boy.”
Truly, the pinnacle of intellectual discourse!
Life does not revolve around you. Try to get over the shock.
Oh, the shock! The horror! How could anyone possibly think that their
own perspective matters? It’s almost as if you believe your opinions
are the sun around which the universe orbits. Spoiler alert: they’re
not.
Wanking and waffle, do you do anything else?
Ah, the classic insult! A true gem in the treasure chest of internet
sins. But let’s not overlook your own waffle-making skills, which are
on full display in your verbose diatribe.
The Lord is focused on truth, not your "truth," His Truth.
Ah, the “truth” dichotomy! A favorite among those who wield their
beliefs like a sword, slashing through the fabric of reason. But tell
me, dear DJ, what is “His Truth” if not a reflection of your own
biases?
You are not interested in being open-minded, Mr. Hypocrite Vitriol.
A masterstroke of projection! You, who have constructed a veritable
fortress of dogma, dare to accuse others of close-mindedness? It’s like
a bull in a china shop calling the porcelain delicate.
You’re a bullshit artist who is filled with his own self-importance.
And here we arrive at the pièce de résistance! The grand finale of your
tirade, where you lay bare your own insecurities. But fret not, for I
am here to offer you a path to redemption.

For your internet sins—name-calling, trolling, and the egregious act of
self-righteousness—I extend my hand in forgiveness. Repent, dear DJ!
Cast aside your keyboard warrior persona and embrace the humility that
comes from recognizing that the world does not revolve around your
opinions.

In the spirit of grace, I promise to forgive you, should you choose to
abandon your digital crusade and seek the light of reason. Until then,
may your internet connection be strong, and your arguments be ever so
slightly less absurd.
