Introduction
God calls you to a life of godliness and fruitful faith. In 2 Peter 1,
He gives you the tools to grow spiritually and equips you to confirm
your calling and election (1:3-11). The apostle Peter emphasizes God’s
divine power, which grants you everything you need for life and
godliness through the knowledge of Christ (1:3). You have been given
precious promises that enable you to escape the corruption of the world
and partake in God’s nature (1:4). Through diligent effort, you grow in
virtues like faith, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, and love,
ensuring a fruitful life in Christ (1:5-8). Peter reminds you of the
reliability of Scripture, which is inspired by the Holy Spirit and
serves as a lamp shining in a dark place (1:19-21).
God is not a scripture, Sinner; He's a Person.
Let's just sum all that up, shall we: "Me, me, me, it is up to me."
Typical, I am my own saviour "diligent effort" sinner christianity.

God provides everything for your spiritual growth. His power ensures you
lack nothing needed for a godly life (1:3). The word for
"knowledge" (epignosis) means "full and intimate understanding,"
highlighting the deep relationship you have with Christ. You do not grow
spiritually through your own strength but through the power of Christ
and His promises, which enable you to share in His divine nature (1:4).
Your faith must bear fruit. Peter lists qualities to supplement your
faith, such as virtue and love, and he promises that practicing these
virtues validates your faith (1:5-8). The word for
"steadfastness" (hypomone) means "endurance under pressure," encouraging
you to persevere in trials. Growth in these virtues confirms your
salvation and secures a rich welcome into Christ’s kingdom (1:10-11).
The Scriptures provide a solid foundation for your faith. Peter insists
that he does not rely on cleverly devised myths but on his eyewitness
testimony of Christ’s majesty (1:16-18). The word
"majesty" (megaleiotes) emphasizes Christ’s divine glory, revealed on
the Mount of Transfiguration. Additionally, prophecy in Scripture is not
the product of human will but originates from the Holy Spirit, making it
utterly reliable (1:20-21).
Reproof
Peter warns against spiritual complacency. You cannot afford to neglect
your faith or let it stagnate. Without effort, you risk becoming
ineffective and unfruitful (1:8). The word for "blind" (typhlos) means
"unable to see," showing that failure to grow blinds you to God’s
promises and past grace (1:9). If you ignore the tools God provides, you
lose assurance and jeopardize your spiritual progress (1:10).
Peter also reproves those who doubt the reliability of Scripture. He
refutes skepticism by pointing to his firsthand experience and the
prophetic Word, which shines as a lamp in the darkness. Doubting God’s
Word leads to confusion and a loss of direction (1:19-21).
Correction
God calls you to diligent effort. Peter urges you to "make every effort"
to supplement your faith with godly virtues (1:5). The word
"effort" (spoude) means "zeal or earnestness," reminding you to approach
spiritual growth with urgency and resolve. You confirm your calling and
election by growing in Christlikeness, which leads to assurance and
fruitfulness (1:10-11).
Anchor your faith in God’s promises. By meditating on Scripture, you
escape worldly corruption and grow in godliness. Peter compares the Word
to a lamp in a dark place, urging you to trust its light until the day
dawns and Christ returns (1:19).
Instruction in Righteousness
God trains you to live a life of increasing fruitfulness. Peter outlines
a progression of virtues, beginning with faith and culminating in love.
The word "love" (agape) means "selfless, sacrificial affection," which
reflects Christ’s love for you. Practicing these qualities not only
confirms your faith but also ensures you avoid stumbling in your walk
with God (1:10).
Trust God’s Word as your guide. Peter affirms the divine origin of
Scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit and trustworthy in every detail.
Regular study of Scripture equips you for every good work and
strengthens your faith during trials (1:19-21).
Invitation
Peter’s words remind you that Christ died for your sins, providing a way
to partake in God’s divine nature. His death satisfies God’s justice,
and His resurrection assures you of eternal life. If you have never
trusted in Christ, change your mind about sin and call on the name of
the Lord for salvation. Believe that Christ bore the penalty for your
sins and rose again to give you new life. Trust in Him today, and He
will welcome you into His kingdom.
For believers, commit to growing in the virtues outlined in this
passage. Pursue faith, love, and steadfastness with diligence, knowing
that your growth glorifies God and prepares you for His eternal kingdom.
Let Scripture guide and strengthen you as you walk in the light of
Christ’s promises.
